If your summer calendar is wide open but you’re not in the mood to pack up the car and head out of town every weekend, you’re not alone. Fortunately, Mullica Hill and the surrounding area offer plenty of low-effort, high-reward events, especially if you’re trying to make the most of the season without going far.
Dr. Bowen and the team at Bowen Family Orthodontics love seeing families out and about in the community. Whether you’re new to the area or just looking for a few things to do with your kids that don’t involve another trip to Target, these five local family-friendlt events are worth checking out.
Harrison Township Recreation Half-Day Summer Camps
- Local Parks and Rec Spaces in Mullica Hill
- Multiple sessions available all summer (Monday–Thursday)
- Ages 5–11
If you’re in the thick of summer break and starting to hear “I’m bored” more often than not, these local half-day camps can help. They’re designed for kids ages 5 to 11, and each week offers a different theme, so things stay fresh. From sports and obstacle courses to art projects and scavenger hunts, there’s always something going on.
You’ll want to register each child separately, and there’s a discount for signing up early. All campers are grouped by age, so your 5-year-old won’t be thrown in with tweens. Just send them with a snack and a water bottle, and you’re good to go. Here’s why these camps work well for a lot of local families:
- You get a predictable break in the day, four days a week.
- Kids stay active and make friends.
- It doesn’t feel like school, but there’s still some structure.
- No long drive or complicated sign-in process.
If your child has been needing something to do beyond screens and playdates, this is an easy way to give them a summer experience without a full-blown day camp commitment.
Washington Township Fourth of July Spectacular Fireworks Show
- Washington Township High School. 529 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, Sewell, NJ
- Friday, July 4 at 9:00 PM
There’s something about a classic fireworks show that brings everyone together, and this one draws a great crowd every year. You can expect the usual lineup, such as blankets on the grass, kids with glow necklaces, and families kicking back while they wait for the sky to light up.
Parking fills up fast, so getting there early is worth it. Bring snacks, bug spray, and something to keep little ones entertained while waiting for dusk. You’ll have plenty of space to spread out, and it’s close enough to home that you won’t be stuck driving late into the night afterward.
If your kids have never experienced a fireworks show in person, this is a solid one to start with.
Lee’s Circus Extravaganza at Dream Park
- Dream Park. 400 US-130, Logan Township, NJ
- Wednesday, July 24 at 10:30 AM (about 45 minutes long)
This one’s a quick, fun option that’s perfect for younger kids, or anyone who just wants a change of pace mid-week. Lee’s Circus puts on a short, high-energy performance filled with juggling, clowning, and a few surprises.
You won’t be stuck in a long, crowded show, and since it’s only about 15 minutes from Mullica Hill, it’s one of those events you can do in the morning and still have the rest of your day free.
Bring a snack or stop for lunch afterward to turn it into a full outing. It’s lighthearted, easygoing, and a great pick if you’re looking for something different to break up the usual routine.
Gloucester County 4-H Fair
- Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds
- July 24 at 10:00 AM – July 27 at midnight
- $20 per carload
This event is a bigger commitment time-wise, but it’s also packed with options. From tractor pulls and livestock shows to live music, pony rides, and art contests, there’s something for every age. You’ll find hands-on activities for kids, plus local vendors and plenty of fair food.
New this year: kiddie amusement rides and a Fair Royalty Competition.
If your family likes to walk around and take everything in at your own pace, this is a great choice. Just make sure you dress for the weather and bring cash for food or extra activities. Admission is per vehicle, so it’s affordable if you’re loading up a few kids or coming with friends.
Outdoor Drive-In Movie Night Featuring Dog Man
- Hosted by the Harrison Township Recreation Commission
- Date: August 22 at 8:00 pm
- Free admission
If your family hasn’t been to a drive-in movie before, this is a good one to try. The featured film is Dog Man, so you already know your kids will be into it. The lot opens 90 minutes before the movie starts, and the earlier you get there, the better your spot.
You’re welcome to bring your favorite snacks, but there will also be candy, popcorn, and drinks available to buy. Each attendee will be given a treat voucher to use at Cherry on Top or Kona Ice, provided by the Harrison Township Fire District as part of the fun. Here’s what else makes it a win:
- No admission fee
- No need to keep toddlers quiet in a theater
- The car acts as your own little bubble
- Simple and low-stress evening out
It’s hosted locally and supported by sponsors, so it’s a nice way to enjoy something free while supporting the community.
